Custom NFL Jerseys: How Name & Number Personalization Works

1. How NFL jersey personalization works

Ordering a custom NFL jersey is straightforward, but the steps are slightly different from buying a player jersey off the shelf:

1. Choose a blank or custom-friendly jersey. Start with a team’s Game Custom, Limited Custom or Elite Custom option rather than a player-specific SKU.
2. Enter the name and number. Most customizers accept 00–99 and a name up to 10–12 characters, depending on the jersey template.
3. Pick the size. NFL jerseys are cut for shoulder pads, so they run roomier than soccer shirts. Measure your chest and compare it to the size chart, or read our league-by-league size chart for side-by-side comparisons.
4. Place the order. Custom items are produced to order, so dispatch is typically 7–15 business days.

2. Custom jersey vs. player jersey: which should you buy?

The biggest decision is whether you want a specific player’s name or your own. A player jersey ships faster and is usually cheaper when on promotion; a custom jersey gives you flexibility and is the only way to wear a retired legend, a fantasy name, or your own number.

3. Name & number rules every fan should know

• Numbers: Retail customizers generally allow any number from 00 to 99, regardless of position. The NFL does not enforce college-style number rules at the retail level.
• Name length: Most templates cap the back name at 10–12 characters. Short names print cleanly; very long names may be shrunk to fit.
• Profanity filters: Licensed platforms block offensive language and some trademarked phrases. Team-specific retired numbers may still be produced on request if the platform accepts the number.
• Fonts: Official team fonts are embedded in the template, so a Cincinnati Bengals custom jersey uses Bengals-style numerals and a 49ers custom jersey uses 49ers-style numerals.
• Jersey number placement: Numbers appear on the front, back and (on most jerseys) shoulders; names appear across the upper back.

5. How long does it take, and can I return a custom jersey?

Because the name and number are applied after the order is placed, custom jerseys take longer than off-the-shelf player jerseys. Our standard dispatch window is 7–15 business days. For delivery speed, order early ahead of gameday.
