Soccer Jersey Sponsors & Crests Explained (2026 Fan Guide)
Updated September 22, 2026 · 7 min read
1. What the crest and the sponsor actually are
Every soccer jersey tells two stories at once. The crest (or badge) is the club’s registered identity: its colours, its founding year, its city. The sponsor is the commercial partner that pays for the most valuable advertising space in the sport — the centre of the shirt. Everything else on the kit, from the maker’s logo to sleeve patches, is arranged around those two anchors.
Both are governed by rules. The crest is a trademark registered by the club or federation, and competition regulations dictate exactly where it sits. Sponsor logos are sized and positioned by league kit regulations too, so no club can turn its shirt into an unregulated billboard.
2. The crest: the club’s identity
The crest is the one element on the shirt that never changes hands. It carries the club’s colours and usually its founding year — think of Paris Saint-Germain’s Eiffel Tower cradle or Inter Milan’s interlocking FCIM monogram. It is worn on the wearer’s left chest, over the heart, and national teams wear their federation’s crest in the same spot instead.
On matchday the crest is how fans, officials and broadcasters identify the team at a glance. That is also why counterfeits are so easy to spot: a real, licensed shirt has the crest correctly coloured, positioned and applied — embroidered or heat-pressed exactly as the club’s registered badge.
3. The sponsor: the shirt’s economics
Front-of-shirt sponsorship is one of the biggest revenue lines in club football. Deals at top European clubs are worth tens of millions of dollars per season, which is why the sponsor sits in the most valuable spot on the kit: dead centre of the chest, where every camera points.
The market is tightening. The Premier League has moved to ban betting brands from front-of-shirt sponsorship from the 2026–27 season, and other competitions restrict what a shirt sponsor can be. National-team shirts work differently: World Cup and national kits carry federation partners rather than club sponsors.
4. Where everything sits on the shirt
Kit regulations keep the anatomy of a jersey remarkably consistent across leagues. Learn it once and you can read any shirt in the world:
| Element | What it is | Typical position |
|---|---|---|
| Crest (badge) | The club’s or federation’s registered identity — colours, founding year, city | Left chest (wearer’s left, over the heart) |
| Shirt sponsor | A paid commercial partner’s logo — the biggest revenue line on the kit | Centre of the chest |
| Maker’s logo | The kit manufacturer’s trademark | Right chest, plus sleeves |
| Sleeve & league patches | Competition badges and additional partners | Both sleeves |
| Name & number | Player identification | Centre of the back, below the collar |
5. Do replica jerseys carry the crest and sponsor?
Yes. A properly licensed replica (fan) jersey carries the same crest, sponsor and patches as the on-pitch version — the difference between replica and authentic is the fit and fabric, never the branding. What changes between seasons is the shirt design around those marks, which is why last season’s shirt can look out of date even though the badge never moved.

What is the crest on a soccer jersey?
The crest (or badge) is the club’s registered identity — its colours, founding year and city. It is worn on the wearer’s left chest of the shirt, and national teams wear their federation’s crest in the same position.
Why do soccer jerseys have sponsors?
Shirt sponsorship is one of the biggest revenue sources in club football. The centre of the chest is prime advertising space, and front-of-shirt deals at top clubs are worth tens of millions of dollars per season.
Where is the crest placed on a soccer shirt?
On the wearer’s left chest, over the heart. The kit maker’s logo sits on the right chest, and the sponsor’s logo occupies the centre of the shirt.
Do replica jerseys have the same crest and sponsor as player versions?
Yes. Licensed replica (fan) jerseys carry identical crest, sponsor and patch branding to the on-pitch shirt — only the cut and fabric differ.
Are betting sponsors being banned on soccer shirts?
The Premier League has moved to ban betting brands from front-of-shirt sponsorship from the 2026–27 season. Other competitions set their own rules on what a shirt sponsor can be.
